The theater is deservedly considered one of the oldest in Russia and is known throughout the world due to the high level of training of opera singers and choreographic troupe.

Guests of the Northern capital who want to join the world of art should find out in advance where the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg is located. The main building is located on Theater Square, but opera and ballet lovers can also visit branches of the Mariinsky Theater (as the theater is popularly called). By the address:

  • Second stage (Mariinka-2): st. Decembrists, 34;
  • Concert Hall (Mariinka-3): st. Decembrists, 37;
  • Seaside scene: Vladivostok, st. Fastovskaya, 20.

Although the current building was opened to the public in 1860 with the premiere of the famous opera A Life for the Tsar, the official date of birth of the Mariinsky Theater is late 18th century. In October 1783, the Grand opening The Bolshoi Theater, built on the personal order of Empress Catherine and designed by the famous Italian architect Rinaldi. Italian and French operas were often staged here, as well as vocal concerts and musical evenings.

In the 19th century, most of the performances were staged on the stage of the Circus Theatre, built opposite the Bolshoi and almost completely destroyed by fire in 1859. At the same time, work began on the construction of a new imperial theater, which became a real architectural decoration of the city. They were led by the talented Italian architect Alberto Cavosa.

Most visitors are interested in who the Mariinsky Theater is named after. The harmonious name was given to him in honor of the wife of the Russian monarch, Maria. The wife of the then ruler Alexander II was known as a real patroness of fine arts. Therefore, the first performers of the Mariinsky Theater were the singers and choreographers of her personal troupe.

Theater interior

The building of the Mariinsky Theater is interesting not only for its unusual semicircular shape, but also for its interior. When visiting the performance, you should pay attention to the following attractions:

Royal lodge. It is one of the largest and most pompous in the building. Once the box was decorated with a monogram, which picturesquely combined the first letters of the names of Tsar Alexander II and his wife. In Soviet times, it was replaced by the hammer and sickle emblem, but in the 90s of the twentieth century, the original decoration of the box was restored. Now ordinary people can buy tickets to it on the official website of the Mariinsky Theater, located in the center of St. Petersburg, unless seats are reserved for diplomats and members of the government. The cost of tickets to the royal box is 4100-4400 RUB. In the wall of the box, you can see a secret door behind the scenes, which leads directly to the dressing rooms of the artists, to the "women's part" of the theater. According to legend, in this way the Russian tsars visited their beloved ballerinas incognito.

Orchestra pit with rising and falling floor. For this, hydraulic lifts are mounted in it. During the restoration of the building, a layer of fragments of broken crystal dishes was discovered under the floor covering. As it turns out, more than 200 years ago, architects used it to improve room acoustics.

Hall of Alexander Golovin, equipped directly under the roof of the theater and bearing the name of an outstanding Russian painter of the late 19th - first half of the 20th century. Nowadays, most of the scenery for operas and ballets is created here. Many of them can safely be called masterpieces. visual arts. The chair is still kept in the room, in which the artist is painted on a portrait by his colleague Yakovlev. This painting can be seen in the foyer of the 3rd tier.

The room is famous for the fact that it was in it that Golovin painted his famous painting, on which the genius Chaliapin is depicted as the usurper Godunov from the opera of the same name. Here the outstanding Russian poets Voloshin and Gumilyov quarreled, and it came to bloodshed and a duel.

Curtain. Its author is the same Golovin, who performed it surprisingly skillfully in the 1910s. The curtain is considered a symbol of the Mariinsky Theater and combines traditional pictorial techniques and applications, exactly reproducing the train pattern from one of Empress Maria's ceremonial dresses.

three tier chandelier, made of bronze and illuminating the auditorium. Its weight is over 2 tons. More than 200 light bulbs are installed in the lamp, giving an unusually bright light thanks to more than 2000 crystal pendants. The latter adorn all tiers of the chandelier, and the ceiling is painted with images of merry nymphs and cupids, as well as portraits of famous domestic playwrights of past centuries.

Bell, "dwelling" in the theater for over 200 years. It is used in the opera productions Khovanshchina and Boris Godunov. According to legend, immediately after the revolution, he was removed from one of the temples and thrown into the Neva. From there he was pulled out shortly before the beginning of the Great Patriotic War and donated to the Mariinsky Theatre.

Repertoire of the Mariinsky Theater

The poster of the Mariinsky Theater for 2017 will delight art lovers with a variety of opera and ballet performances. Some of them have been on stage for decades, others are designed for lovers of new products in the field of beauty. The repertoire of the Mariinsky last years includes the following views:

  • The Tale of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia. This mystical story about love for the motherland and tender feelings of the prince and a simple girl in the interpretation of the directors received a completely new sound. From the Old Slavonic legend, the action of the opera is quite organically transferred to our modern reality with homeless people and the clothes of heroes familiar to the 21st century. People depicting animals, insects instead of dashing invaders-Tatars and today's homeless people in the role of beggars of the 13th century look quite shocking.
  • "Swan Lake". The main stage of the theater has become the scene of the action of the beautiful love story between Prince Siegfried and the enchanted swan princess who never lost her charm. The ballet to the immortal music of Tchaikovsky is a classical choreographic production based on the ideas of the famous choreographer Marius Petipa.
  • "Music is pleasant and unpleasant." At this purely instrumental concert you will hear both melodic and touching, as well as unusual and rather extravagant musical works performed by talented violinists, pianists, clarinetists, cellists and flutists.
  • "Carmen". In the new version of the opera, all the same famous opera parts sound, but its action is somewhat modernized and evokes more associations with our reality. A special find of the director is the use of a large number of stairs as scenery. According to him, they symbolize the desire human soul to something sublime and divine.
  • "Salome". This is one of the most anticipated productions of the New Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre. The biblical story of the beautiful stepdaughter of Herod, who demanded the head of the prophet on a platter, turns into a struggle of global ideas on which human society is based: selfishness and altruism. The spectacle of the opera is added by modern video graphics.
  • "Enufa". The story of a lonely pregnant girl who was abandoned by her lover is as old as the world, but the artists of the Mariinsky Theater managed to give it a new sound. In the difficult family ups and downs of this opera, many of the audience will find out what happened to them or their friends.
  • "Giselle". The experiences of the young heroine, deceived by her lover and who died suddenly, are unlikely to leave ballet fans indifferent. Incredibly beautiful dances of heroes, reflecting the whole gamut of human emotions, will be a real gift for true aesthetes.

Opera Madama Butterfly(Cio-Cio-San) G. Puccini
July 27, 2017
Main Stage of the Mariinsky Theater

This performance is true piece of art! Delightful Japanese aesthetic sustained in everything and in every little thing.

The Czech team of artists and director brilliantly coped with the task of translating subtle, harmonious and minimalistic Japanese taste. Every scene is impeccably balanced artistic composition according to the ratio of colors, shapes and washed away, which they carry. If the play didn't have great music by Puccini and talented vocal performance, the organization of the space itself, the costumes of the characters, the movement of scenery objects on the stage, ideally adjusted in terms of the speed and time of their appearance, would be alone capable of charm and immerse in subtle world of feng shui art. I would especially like to note the scenes of the arrival of boats with the bride in the first act and quietly sliding boat - there is no doubt that on the water (!)- at the conclusion of the second act.

Played the title role Victoria Yastrebova and she was absolutely incomparable! Great acting game accurately conveying gestures and movements fragile, young, silent, tender and loving Japanese girl. And the singer expresses all the same in her voice, in surprisingly tremulous singing! Don't doubt her for a second. sincerity. how many compassion, tenderness this heroine calls! And absolutely stunning wholeness, purity and fortitude.

According to the impression that remains after the performance, we can say that this is not just a performance, but some kind of religious and mystical symbolic drama, mystery. Dipping deep into it you are imbued with a subtle spiritual trembling, the energy of a whole spirit and leave the theater with a feeling of fullness, renewal and purification.

In addition, the plot of the performance (those who wish can read on their own on the Internet) interesting from the historical, cultural and political points of view. So, main character American Pinkerton (in a wonderful performance Dmitry Voropaev) embodies the predatory, predatory spirit of the Western world. One of his remarks is very eloquent: “After all, life would be insignificant if you didn’t pick flowers wherever possible”. And the fragile, meek, full of tenderness Madama Butterfly, embodies the natural, not yet “civilized” world, and, wanting to please the American, renounces her own faith, which leads to a break with relatives and, as if between the lines, with herself , blocking all paths back. But still, closeness to nature and primordial religion nurtured in her wholesome and courageous spirit, which was expressed in the last dying remark of the heroine: "He who cannot live with honor must die with honor" .

This is a performance that makes you want to learn Italian and buy tickets to the stalls for it again!
